INNOVA Nano, a Research Unit of INNOVA Onlus, Translation in Medical Research

Nanotechnology offers the opportunity to develop novel micro\nano-carriers for targeted drug therapy, reducing undesirable side effects. In the proposed project, our team will fabricate multifunctional, highly biodegradable and biocompatible, drug-loaded micro\nano-capsules with the following features: 1) to protect drugs from chemical and biological degradation; 2) to monitor their in vitro and in vivo distribution; 3) to target specific cells (i.e. Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC)). Biodegradable polyelectrolyte pairs (eg polysaccharides) with opposite charge will be utilised by the layer-by -layer selfassembly technique on colloidal cores like calcium carbonate. The cores will subsequently be dissolved to yield hollow capsules ready to encapsulate drugs. Selected fluorophores and magnetic nanoparticles will be included in the coating to allow in vitro and in vivo monitoring of micro\nano-capsule fate. Ligands will be conjugated to the coating layers in order to allow specific cellular targeting (eg to HCC cells). The internalisation and cytotoxicity of drug-loaded micro\nano-capsules will be evaluated on cell lines in vitro. The research objectives will drive to: – Development of new bio-products for cancer prevention – Development of novel multifunctional nano-carriers for cancer therapy The present proposal is aimed to the set up new processes For the production and delivery of natural compounds as anticancer drugs – Production of natural products and functional food for pharmaceutical administration – Production of nanocapsules for anti-neoplastic, drug-loading and targeted delivery

Its mission is providing breakthrough technology, in order to increase the efficiency of PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) processes, today used to produce microchips, MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems), solar cells and other nanotech devices. Deposition plants lose a lot of precious materials: every year about 15 tons of gold become a production waste. Our technology makes possible to recover up to 70% of this fraction. If compared to the state of the art, our solution reduces the downtime, allows in-situ recovery, representing a cleantech alternative

NARRANDO (NAno caRbon_RAdiatioN DOsimeter)

The clinical use of ionizing radiation to obtain a necrosing or cytotoxic radiobiological effect on tumoral lesions requires complex physical and dosimetric procedures in order to treat the tumor saving the surrounding healthy tissues. It is necessary to avoid overexposing or ineffective therapy. Moreover, according to the commercial insights and scientific literature, the main technical characteristics, also evaluated by customers in buying such a kind of device, are accuracy, independence from environment conditions, real time response, in vivo applications, space resolution, absolute dose measurement. Therefore, a new priority target in radiotherapy is the research and development of improved detectors. Ionization chambers are considered the most important dosimeters because they allow absolute dose measurements and are characterized by high accuracy, practicality and reliability. However, they have a relative large physical size which limits their spatial resolution and require a high bias voltage to achieve an acceptable collection of charges excluding their use for in vivo dosimetry. These disadvantages require the implementation of ionization chambers with improved electrodes. In particular, the spatial resolution of the existing dosimeters can be enhanced with miniaturized detectors, also for in vivo applications. In this context, we developed novel dosimeters by means of Nanotechnologies. Nanocarbons, such as carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene, for their low production cost and the fascinating physical properties, are very promising materials to obtain a new generation dosimeter, enclosing all the features of an ideal radiation detector and allowing a net scale passage. The proposed dosimeters open prospective for a new competitive and even distruptive innovation to be employed not only for radiotherapy but also for radiology. Indeed, for radiological diagnostic exams, it is necessary to measure the radiation doses in order to optimize the released dose according to ALARA (As Low As reasonably Achievable) principle, without prejudicing the quality of the radiological investigation

Noivion

Noivion is introducing a new manufacturing technique for the deposition of thin films called Ionised Jet Deposition (IJD) that offer substantial advantages over comparable solutions in terms of quality, cost and yield. The IJD method consists of a special electron source placed in a vacuum chamber able to generate repetitively very short and intense electric discharges directed into a solid target. The target, composed by the desired coating material, when hit by the discharge, generates a superficial emission of very energetic material in the form of a plasma. The plasma cools down on any object it finds on its way producing a coating on the object itself made of the same material of the target.

Voltaic Coatings

Voltaic Coatings owns the exclusive license to a pending composition of matter patent for a new material created at the University of Delaware. The material transforms the way electronic displays, touch screens, organic lighting, and thin film solar devices are produced. Dr. David Martin, the Chair of the Material Science Department of the University of Delaware, and scientific advisor to Voltaic Coatings, created the materials, ProDOT+, an electro-conductive polymer that possesses superior molecular properties to existing products. The customizability of ProDOT+ will enable our clients to replace the current materials used in the transparent conductor and hole injection layers of their devices. For OEM manufacturers, roll-to-roll manufacturing of lighting, displays, and flexible touch screens is now a cost effective reality. Consider the implications of “newspaper-printing” display screens.

The selected teams from are now attending the two mentoring sessions given by the consultants of Macorig &Co.
